sql server - Confused by Excel ODC connection files -
so making new connection ms sql server using wizard , realized don't know why has me save these odc connection files.
so, , why excel create them?
further, happens these files once when change connection selecting table, custom sql statement have created?
does change in these odc files? know complains if make change no longer match stored in file.
edit:
i decided 1 of odc files , html combined xml tags , little javascript. interesting. still not sure how excel uses these files instead of storing data itself. guess provide connections multiple workbooks.
i think idea can share these files. put odc on network share or on sharepoint, have multiple workbooks use odc file, , if updates necessary (like database moved), have change in on place.
also, if double click odc file, create new workbook connection , table. guess lean way of sending workbook consists of external data table access same connection. haven't used myself, but, know, theoretically...
why did choose default? don't know. wouldn't have. have chosen have data stored in excel, still have ability export odc want go route. i'll bet vast majority of external data tables have odc sitting in documents , user isn't aware of it.
but pre-tablet ms office seemed base design decisions on biggest clients wanted. , since there isn't cost average user (other warnings may not understand), why not.
