Simple Java application not working -


this pertains problem solved far more elegant code. fooling around , trying solve problem in different way using basic code. problem number getting (2091059712) not correct. correct answer 235146240000. driving me insane. here broken code. trying find 13 adjacent digits within 1000 digit number have largest product.

every multiplication chance overflow. answer overflows before ever gets put in result. 1 solution change definition of array to

long[] x = new long[] 

the same problem shows in puzzler #3 in java puzzlers book:

the problem computation of constant micros_per_day does overflow. although result of computation fits in long room spare, doesn't fit in int. computation performed entirely in int arithmetic , after computation completes result promoted long. then, it's late.

...

so why computation performed in int arithmetic? because factors multiplied int values. when multiply 2 int values int value. java not have target typing, language feature wherein type of variable in result stored influences type of computation.

(java uses target typing in contexts, in array initializers , lambdas, not in general.)

the same text points out first value in expression being multiplied needs long, keep declaration of array using ints , change line:

       result = 1l * x[a] * x[b] * x[c] * x[d] * x[e] * x[f] * x[g] * x[h]                 * x[i] * x[j] * x[k] * x[l] * x[m];
